Cale Gundy: Who is he? Longtime assistant in Oklahoma resigns after using a “shameful and hateful” phrase
In addition to having the longest tenure in the Big 12 Conference, Gundy has been a constant in the Sooners’ football program for the past 24 seasons.

OKLAHOMA’S NORMAN – On Sunday, August 7, 2022, Cale Gundy, a seasoned assistant coach for Oklahoma, submitted his resignation as a result of an incident that occurred during a team film session. Gundy announced his choice by posting a statement to his official Twitter account.

He said in his statement that reading out a “hurtful” term was the primary cause of his departure. Former Sooners quarterback Gundy, who played for the team from 1990 to 1993, has worked as an assistant at Oklahoma State University since 1999.

Cale Gundy: Who is he?

In his lengthy statement, Gundy, who has been a part of the program since 1999, said that he made an error by saying “one particular term that I should never under any circumstances have uttered.” The coach with the longest tenure in the Big 12 Conference was Gundy. Over the past 24 seasons, he has remained a fixture in the Sooners’ football program. From 1990 to 1993, Gundy quarterbacked the Sooners and threw for more than 6,000 yards and 35 touchdowns. In a single season at Oklahoma University in 1992, he created records with 1,914 passing yards. The next year, he broke those marks with 2,311 yards.

He left the university in 1994 after working there as a graduate assistant to coach quarterbacks and later running backs at Alabama-Birmingham. Gundy has a strong reputation as one of the best recruiters, and he was instrumental in keeping the job under Stoops and later Lincoln Riley. Gundy switched to coaching inside receivers in 2015.

“I want to be absolutely clear: the words I read aloud from that screen were not my words,” Gundy said in reference to the event. Despite the fact that what I said was not malicious and was not even deliberate, I am mature enough to see that it was nevertheless hurting and embarrassing. During the film viewing, the previous coach observed one of the players was disengaged, so he took his iPad. I took hold of his iPad and began to read aloud the text shown on the device. The text was not related to football in any way. On the screen was one precise word that I should have never — under any circumstances — said. I didn’t even know what I was reading at the time, and when I did, it horrified me, he continued.

The Oklahoma Football team has acknowledged receiving the resignation. I accept Coach Gundy’s resignation with sadness, Venables wrote. “More than half of his life has been devoted to Oklahoma Football, and he has done great things for both our program and university. We appreciate your dedication. Furthermore, we realize that by resigning, he put the program and the wellbeing of our student-athletes first. We are all responsible for our activities and the results they produce in life and in coaching.

Gundy said that the team, including the coaches, players, staff, and supporters, “does not deserve to be distracted by off-the-field issues while working to uphold the history of success that makes me so proud to be a Sooner.” “I won’t detract from that goal in order to do the program I love a harm. I am resigning with immediate effect,” Gundy stated in his statement. Regarding the incident that caused Gundy to retire, nothing else is known. The former coach and none of his companions have yet to clarify the phrase they used. L’Damian Washington notified the Oklahoma football squad that he would be taking on the team’s new responsibilities.
