On September 10, 2019, the former All My Children star broke his silence about his diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma, better known as kidney cancer. A week later, he underwent an operation called a partial nephrectomy, which removed a tumor from his kidney, taking only a small amount of his kidney with it.

Two days after his Sept. 18 surgery, Mathison took to Instagram to let his fans know that everything was going really well.

The actor posted a photo of himself in a hospital bed to Instagram with the caption, “The tumor is gone and I can actually keep 80% of my kidney.” The shot was taken as the actor was flanked by his two children, Leila and Lucas.

The Canadian actor granted Us Weekly an exclusive interview in which he opened up about his health struggle. He remarked, “I feel like my immune system is slowly but surely making a comeback and I’m really happy about that. My energy is above the roof and I’m still going to the doctor and stuff. My health is improving rapidly.”
