He grew up in Buffalo, New York, and moved to Portland, Oregon in the late 1970s. He attended Raleigh Hills Elementary and Whitford Jr. High School in Portland before enrolling at Jesuit High School in Beaverton, Oregon, where he distinguished himself as a point guard for the basketball team.

Spoelstra had offers for basketball scholarships, but eventually decided to enroll at the University of Portland, his local school. Outside of the United States, he began his coaching career in basketball.
