The nation vocalist, 29, stood out as truly newsworthy with the arrival of his fourth record Subject to Change last week thanks to the track “Doin’ My Best,” whose verses hint at a feud with pop star Halsey.

On the line in question, Ballerini sings: “I’m with a pop star/I even put them on target four/I want it back, I won’t ask/The moment I realize we will. stop talking.”
It’s by all accounts a not-so-subtle reference to Halsey, 28, who collaborated with Ballerini on “The Other Young lady,” the fourth track on country star Kelsea’s third collection.

“Doin’ My Best” also includes verses reflecting on Ballerini’s disastrous marriage to country vocalist Morgan Evans, from whom she filed for legal separation in August after nearly five years of marriage. On the track, Ballerini sings about how she went through treatment and was eventually joined by Evans, because, as she says, “when you’ve got your youth, you’ve got a lot – you’ve got to cross over.” The deeply private content of the melody almost suggests that it was left in the collection.

“‘Doin’ My Best’ is one that I almost didn’t do… I really had to have a hard discussion with myself to put it on,” Ballerini said on the webcast. The vocalist of “Heartfirst” understood that he quickly cut 10 melodies for the record, however, a large number of them included verses that were not really consistent with his life, and were more like “someone’s playing. ”

“I was like, ‘Man, I believe I’m giving myself a real raw deal to not continue with what the book opened up for me,'” he revealed, referring to his 2021 verse book Feel Your Direction Through. “It opened up a great depth that I had never been to.”
