Early Life and Education

The only son and eldest child of Cuban parents, Rodriguez was born in Newark, New Jersey. His parents are Rawedia Mara Rodrguez and docker Narciso Rodrguez Sanchez II. His paternal grandfather was born in the Canary Islands.

He graduated from the modest Catholic St. Cecilia’s High School in Kearny, New Jersey in 1979.

He attended Parsons The New School for Design while living in New York City. Narciso’s parents were against him going into the fashion industry.

Career

Rodriguez worked as a freelance designer in New York before becoming Women’s Design Director for the Anne Klein label and later working for Calvin Klein. After leaving Anne Klein, Rodriguez worked for Calvin Klein. It was 1996 when he designed the wedding dress for fellow Calvin Klein contributor Carolyn Bessette for her marriage to John F. Kennedy Jr. This was the first time he had attracted much attention for his work. In 1997 he founded his own record label.

After the death of John F. Kennedy Jr., Rodriguez hired Stephanie Mikesell, who had previously worked as an editorial assistant at George magazine, as his assistant. George magazine had failed due to the death of John F. Kennedy Jr. When she married Mark Madoff, Bernie Madoff’s eldest son, he designed the wedding dress she wore.

In 2003, he introduced Narciso Rodriguez for Her, his debut fragrance inspired by a bottle of Egyptian musk oil he received as a gift in high school.

In 2006, Rodriguez needed fabric donations for his spring collection. He had ended his collaboration with the producer of his label Aeffe and owed his suppliers more than a million dollars.

On May 5, 2007, Liz Claiborne completed the purchase of a 50 percent interest in the Narciso Rodriguez label.

On the other hand, Narciso Rodriguez paid Liz Claiborne a total of $12 million in 2008 to buy back a half stake in the company from her. On November 4, 2008, when Michelle Obama joined her husband Barack Obama, who was making his first appearance as President-elect of the United States, on stage in Chicago’s Grant Park, she wore a dress from Narciso Rodríguez’s Spring 2009 collection. The dress received a lot of media attention as she joined her husband on stage. Rodriguez’s “Stress Relief” design collection was the inspiration for the dress, which was first shown to the public during New York Fashion Week in September 2008. In fashion, Rodriguez was a staunch supporter of Barack Obama’s campaign; in August 2008 he blamed “that Bush disaster” for a slowdown in his business. For her final appearance as First Lady, Michelle Obama attended the State of the Union in a gown designed by Narciso Rodriguez. That same year, dresses designed by Rodriguez were featured in a runway sequence in the feature film The Women, where they were portrayed as creations of the character Mary Haines (played by Meg Ryan).
